The borough of Queens, New York has evolved into the most ethnically diverse place in New York due to the continuing story of multi-cultural newcomers. The Irish were the first large wave of immigrants in the early 1900’s, followed by the Germans and Italians. Subsequent waves beginning in the 1950’s and thereafter, included Greeks, Asians, Indians, Blacks or Africans, Hispanics or Latinos and many others.
This book is dedicated to my father, George Mallis, who emigrated from Lesvos, Greece to New York in 1955. He settled in Queens in 1959 and who along with so many immigrants worked hard to provide for his family and to create a better future for his children. George Mallis believed in the American dream and he gave it all he had.
